Laura Nash

Artist’s Statement:

Working in several media over time, always considering the state of the environment, and our experience of it. In photography, I had traveled with a Pew Charitable Trust grant to the oil producing region of Ecuador, filming the effects of (Exxon) oil contamination in the jungle, as part of a series on Brownfields, in the U.S. and the Americas. In sculpture, I constructed algae tanks, including a large scale public sculpture at Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn, with the Public Art Fund, and several site specific installations, with grant from Art Matters, Inc..

Currently in painting and drawing, considering the local environment. In our views of nature, here in NYC, we see the natural growth patterns intersecting with man-made structures. This creates new patterns, and a tension between the intersection of observation, pattern recognition, and the nature of materials.

Teaching: Studio art, and Photography: Brooklyn College, Pratt Institute, I.C.P., NYC D.O.E. K-12, and AMNH Teacher training workshops.
